Training Dogs
Where did you learn most of what you know about training your dogs?

I’ve had dogs since the day I was born but I have to admit, as much as I loved him, my first dog I had as an adult, I knew absolutely nothing about training and he wasn’t trained at all so I read, read, read and researched and I’ve seen a world of difference with the dog I have now. I definitely learned from all the mistakes I made. How or where did you learn about training your dogs?

Trial & error, but without a doubt my steepest learning curve was training a weak nerved dog. I recognized that his behavioral issue was beyond the scope of my training ability, so sought the help of professionals.

First he was fvcked up & shut down by one asinine behaviorist & assessed by a clueless supposedly professional dog trainer & I was at a loss to know where to find a half decent professional dog trainer to work with me.

The final straw came when the bloody hound bit my thigh when he was in a state of heightened anxiety at a training class. I gave my dog one helluva hard *I will not tolerate your bullsh*t* collar correction immediately after the bite, so he was very clear in his head that there would be an unpleasant negative consequence for his behavior.

I had never given a dog such a HARD correction before, but it worked & that was when it clicked that I could work to control his behavior.

What I have learned is that there are many people who call themselves professional dog trainers, but few who deserve it.

Since then I have researched obedience training & canine behavior online, read books by people who actually know how the canine mind works. I now know a professional dog trainer worthy of the name who has an innate understanding of canine behavior & years of real practical experience working with dogs, whose advice I trust implicitly.
