Training classes for a Jack Russell Terrier, is it too late?
Hi, I have a Jack Russell Terrier who is two years old, and I love him very much and I think i just spoil him too much, so his behavior isn’t that great. He’s sometimes good in the house but he wants to play so much and doesn’t know when to stop, he barks at my father all the time because my father never shows him love. I’ve been trying to save money when I dont have expenses. Since he’s two is he still trainable? Should I take him to Petsmart training or a professional trainer? And how much will a professional trainer cost? They won’t hit the dog will they?
A trainer should not hit a dog, ever, if they are a reputable one. It’s also never too late to train! I would not use PetsMart, they are OK for an average dog and basic obedience, but when it comes to problem behavior, a private trainer will be a better choice, a good trainer will help you with suggestions for ‘problem’ behaviors if you are enrolled in classes with them. Around here, a 6-8 week series of basic obedience classes runs about $65-$95, depending on the instructor. I’d start here: http://www.apdt.com/ to locate a few positive reinforcement trainers near you. I’d suggest you observe a class before committing to a particular instructor, a reputable trainer will happily allow you to watch one of their classes.
