How many times have you come home from work to find the corner of your carpet chewed up? Have your cushions been ripped to shreds and your lovely sofa chewed and damaged? It’s a fact that dogs will always chew but you need to stop destructive chewing. Thankfully, with good training from yourselves, you can solve your dog chewing problems.
THE SOONER, THE BETTER
As with any dog obedience issues, it’s best to address your dog chewing problems when your dog is young. Failure to act fast can be fatal as your dog could easily be chewing something they shouldn’t, like a piece of plastic and get a piece of it caught in their windpipe and choke to death.
It’s important to ensure that your dog gets the right amount of exercise each day. If your dog gets a good run before he is left on his own, he is less likely to chew as he will be too tired! Dogs that have a high energy level need a lot of exercise as they will just end up chewing out of boredom.
If your puppy is chewing is should be a relatively easy problem to solve. Between the age of 14-28 weeks, your puppy is teething. His gums will be sore so he chews to relieve the pain. At this stage he will chew anything he can lay his paws on.
What I found worked really well when my puppy was teething was to get a wet cloth and freeze it. Give this to your puppy to chew and he will love you forever! Don’t let it get too soft, keep putting it back in the freezer.
WHEN OLDER DOGS CHEW
It is harder to solve dog chewing problems in older dogs but you can teach an old dog new tricks! Older dogs generally chew because of two reasons, boredom or because of a lack of food or nutrition.
When your older dog is being left home alone, you must ensure that he has a variety of toys and chews to play with that are have different shapes and textures. Kongs are great to have around! You can fill them with tasty treats such as vegemite or little biscuits and your dog will have lots of fun trying to lick all the goodies out of it!
Make sure that your dog is eating the right type of food and the right amount. Check with your vet if you are unsure.
The important thing to remember is to use a sharp command such as “NO” when they are chewing something that they shouldn’t be and give them one of their chews instead.
If you praise your dog when he chews something that’s ok, make sure that you praise him, so that he can learn.
